Homework: Compare and Contrast Short Response Paragraph
1 February,2018By: Anna DeRoos
In continuing with our theme -- what inspires people to take action to improve their world -- we read and analyzed a narrative titled "The Most Daring of Our Leaders" and a speech by John Lewis from the Democratic National Convention. Students were then asked to write a short response paragraph that compares the two works. We brainstormed similarities and differences in class, and students were expected to follow along and take notes. They were then asked to complete a graphic organizer to begin drafting their paragraph. Students were expected to finish the majority of the graphic organizer in class and finish the rest for homework, along with a typed or handwritten final copy in paragraph form.

The narrative is about Diane Nash and her experiences as a young activist during The Civil Rights Movement, while the speech is a reflection on how far we've come since the days when Lewis was a young man fighting for African American rights during the same time period.
